Written by 相信大家都曾經到過 King’s Cross，六條地鐵綫交滙，火車綫貫通國內，歐洲綫亦由隔鄰 St Pancras 出發，遊人如鯽。著名倫敦美術大學 Central St Martins 遷入，IT公司 Google、Meta (Facebook) 前後進駐，豪宅落成入住。不過，與老鄰居傾談之下，King’s Cross 在2000年前乃三教九流、毒品濫藥、尋歡賣醉之地，本地人避之則吉。翻查文獻，原來在19世紀時期，King’s Cross 曾經是工業、能源及物流樞紐，經濟民生活動十分蓬勃。火車站上的鐘樓正好見証了這段歷史和變化。
8月13日 (星期二) 上午10:15，讓我們相約於鐘樓下，一起用腳步走進這新舊建築交融的社區，用眼睛和心靈去學習市區重建背後的價值和方向。
I am sure many of you have been to King’s Cross before. With six intersecting tube lines and railway connections across the country and to Europe via the neighbouring St Pancras Station, it is flooded with visitors. The renowned Central St Martins – University of the Arts London has relocated here, and IT companies like Google and Meta (Facebook) have set up offices, with luxury residential developments also completed. However, upon speaking with long-time local residents, we learn that prior to the 2000s, King’s Cross was an area known for the seedy, with drug abuse and prostitution rampant, causing locals to steer clear of the neighbourhood. Delving into historical records, we find that in the 19th century, King’s Cross was in fact a thriving industrial, energy, and logistics hub, with the clock tower at the train station standing as a testament to this rich history and transformation.
On Tuesday, 13 August at 10:15 am, let’s meet under the clock tower and embark on a journey to explore this community where old and new coexist, and to learn about the values and direction behind the urban regeneration efforts with our eyes and hearts.
