King’s Cross 市區重建: 歷史傳承與持續發展   King’s Cross Urban Regeneration: Conservation of History and Sustainable Development (13/08/2024)

相信大家都曾經到過 King’s Cross，六條地鐵綫交滙，火車綫貫通國內，歐洲綫亦由隔鄰 St Pancras 出發，遊人如鯽。著名倫敦美術大學 Central St Martins 遷入，IT公司 Google、Meta (Facebook) 前後進駐，豪宅落成入住。不過，與老鄰居傾談之下，King’s Cross 在2000年前乃三教九流、毒品濫藥、尋歡賣醉之地，本地人避之則吉。翻查文獻，原來在19世紀時期，King’s Cross 曾經是工業、能源及物流樞紐，經濟民生活動十分蓬勃。火車站上的鐘樓正好見証了這段歷史和變化。 8月13日 (星期二) 上午10:15，讓我們相約於鐘樓下，一起用腳步走進這新舊建築交融的社區，用眼睛和心靈去學習市區重建背後的價值和方向。 I am sure many of you have been to King's Cross before. Bloomsbury 在17-19世紀時逐步發展，文化滙萃，特別以文學及醫藥為主軸，名師輩出。 著名學府UCL (University College London) 於1836年在此建校，為高等教育普及化和平權當先鋒，率先招收女生。發起功利主義的哲學家Jeremy Bentham 乃籌辦 UCL 發起人之一。 Bloomsbury 地靈人傑，在1907-1930 期間吸引了不少知識份子、作家、畫家、哲學家及文化界精英以 Bloomsbury 為家，經常互相往來聚會，被稱為 Bloomsbury Group。著名女作家 Virginia Woolf 夫婦，她妹妹及兄弟均是當中的活躍份子。 Henry Wellcome 是一位成功的藥劑商人，憑著他的捐獻，醫藥科研得以進一步發展，相關的文獻及文物亦有系統地保留，Wellcome Collection 也設館於Bloomsbury ｡  這次活動我們將會一同遊走，重踏當年多位大師的足跡。 Bloomsbury gradually developed during the 17th to 19th centuries, becoming a hub of culture, particularly focusing on literature and medicine, with many renowned masters emerging.
